Homestead Happenings August 2015

Well it’s official, we’ve got our first intern here at the Traditional Catholic Homestead!   OK, well he’s not actually an intern, he’s my brother…. but he’s here and he’s going to be helping me out with a ton of projects.  Some are really cool, and some are relatively mundane.  We’re going to be moving the chicken coup and setting up the new runs with rotating paddocks, upgrading the solar panels (did I mention the homestead is 100% off grid?), replacing the film on the greenhouse with a product called Solawrap (review to come), maybe building some giant hugelkulture mounds (post to come!), building some on contour swales for water harvesting(post to come!), and then bringing in a lot of firewood!  We’ve got Fair this month so the livestock population should be dwindling a bit with the older kids selling off their market animals, but Allie the red devon heifer should be dropping her first calf pretty soon!  I harvested the garlic and it’s curing right now!  I think we’ve got about 30 lbs of garlic this year( I’ll weigh it out after it’s all cured)!  Anyway we’ll be planting that later in the year.  Well there’s always a ton of work to do on the homestead, so I’m back at it.  Until next time… Pax!
