Portable Milking Stanchion (pt. 2 the Rest of the Story)

Portable Milking Stanchion (pt. 2 the Rest of the Story)

Last time I exlained why we went with the portable design, provided the materials list, and showed how to make the head gate for our portable milking stanchion (goto Part 1 here).  This time around we’re going to be talking about building the elevated milking platform, installing the head gate, and putting the whole thing together.  I’ll be sharing some tips, tricks, and tweaks that we came up with to optimize our design as well! Now onto the milking platform…….

Building a Portable Milking Stanchion (pt. 1 The Headgate)

Building a Portable Milking Stanchion (pt. 1 The Headgate)

Being able to secure your cow while milking is one of those unique homestead pleasures that you don’t really appreciate until you have to try to do without.  I’ve tried milking out in the field, and while that 3 oz of fresh milk was delicious it was a far cry from being anything that I wanted to attempt on a larger scale!  That’s why when we made the leap to in house homestead dairy production one of the first things…

Pasture Based Dairy….

Pasture Based Dairy….

So we’re trying to figure out if pastured dairy is not only doable, but economically viable on our homestead.  Like so many of the other experiments on our place our primary goal is to provide for our family the absolute best tasting, most nutritionally dense, and uterly healthy food posible.  Secondary to that goal is minimizing inputs (financial, labor, etc.) while maximizing outputs….basic frugality and convenience.  Enter our pasture based livestock production! Grass grows pretty good here, heck you can’t…

A Case for Raw Milk…(Slide Show)

A Case for Raw Milk…(Slide Show)

Raw milk has gotten a bad rap over the years!  The good folks over at RealMilk.com and the Weston A. Price Foundation are on a crusade to change that.  Here’s a nice educational slide show laying out the benefits of raw milk consumption and the case against pasteurization…

American Milking Devon Cattle…Profile of A Traditional Homestead Cow

American Milking Devon Cattle…Profile of A Traditional Homestead Cow

I’m not sure if you’ve picked up on this yet or not, but I am a big believer that everything on the homestead should be performing more than one function.  From plants, to people, to livestock if you’re only providing for one function on the farm, well then you’re just slacking.   Everyone must pull their weight!  This brings to mind the traditional role of cattle on the farm.   A family cow is just one of those iconic images that spring immediately…

Homestead Update Aug 2016

Homestead Update Aug 2016

I know it’s been a while since we’ve put out some content, so I thought it would be appropriate to start things off again with a little homestead update: We’ve had a pretty busy spring, spent a lot of time working on our cattle systems, building fence, shifting paddocks, and trying to get the coriography of rotational grazing down.  We’ll be splitting the heard and putting the bulls out to breed the cows here shortly, and weening a heifer or…

Day 2, Halter Training the Heifer (Video)

Day 2, Halter Training the Heifer (Video)

I had to work today ( unfortunately off the homestead! )  so the girls got out and played cowboy!  They got the halter the rest of the way on Beatrice our American Milking Devon heifer and future milk cow.  They got it done way faster than I could have, and really did a heck of a job!…. Before: After: Looks like I might have a cowgirl on my hands….or at least a milkmaid!

Soil Carbon Cowboys (Video): Rotational Grazing With Cover Crops

Soil Carbon Cowboys (Video): Rotational Grazing With Cover Crops

I found this awesome video on rotational grazing and cover crop systems and I thought I would share. I believe systems like this are the future of animal production that is regenerative and has an end product of healthy food that will heal the land.  This is what we are moving towards on the Traditional Catholic Homestead, I just hope we can stay ahead of the curve on this!   Good pasture management is part science and part art, experience cannot…
